Tekmar Energy Win at Walney Offshore Wind Farm
7th December 2009
Tekmar Energy have been awarded the contract to supply their Offshore Wind Farm Turbine cable protection systems to the Walney Offshore Wind Farm located off the coast of North West England. After rigorous evaluation of the Tekmar Energy solution it was adjudged by Visser & Smit Marine Contracting ( VSMC ) and DONG Energy engineers to be the best solution on the marketplace in terms of price, performance and reliability.
The Tekmar Energy Offshore Wind Farm Turbine cable protection system is based upon the requirement to fit into and seal into an internal j-tube positioned inside the monopile of each wind turbine. The Tekmar solution provides rapid installation and scour protection as well as protecting cables and ensuring long service life.
The client benefits are numerous however apart from the excellence of the cable protection provided, massive savings can be made over using traditional external j-tubes with the Tekmar Energy diver-less installation.
During the years 2010 to 2012 DONG Energy plans to construct phase I and II of the Walney Offshore Wind Farm, located approximately 15km off Walney Island, Cumbria, in the Irish Sea in the UK.
The project will be constructed in two phases. Each phase will comprise of 51turbines with a total capacity of approximately 370MW. The development includes foundations, turbines, export- and array cables, offshore substations and onshore connection to grid.
DONG Energy have more than 16 years of experience in developing offshore wind farms, and are a market leader in offshore wind power generation. Construction will begin in Spring 2010.
VSMC will install and maintain power cables from landfall to landfall or from landfall to offshore structures for the power and offshore renewable energy markets. With an extensive fleet of vessels, ROVs and related equipment, VSMC will offer a complete 'grid to turbine' solution, without the need for subcontractors.
